Notes from our Green Party conference fringe

Hello if you attended our event at the Green conference in Blackpool today!

Here are some handout notes for you to get stuck into. Enjoy!

Websites:

Also:
www.frameworksinstitute.org   http://www.politicalstrategy.org/ http://www.politicalstrategy.org/archives/001118.php - this contains more links to Lakoff and also, crucially, details on how the enemy do it: i.e. full links to the political strategy / framing documents that hugely-influential Republican pollster Frank Luntz uses, to advance anti-eco politics in the U.S., via the Republican Right.

Books:
Chris Rose How to win campaigns
George Lakoff Moral politics or Thinking points
Plus Drew Westen’s THE POLITICAL BRAIN:
“What a voter needs to know most in deciding whether to vote for one candidate or the other are four things, roughly in this order: First, do they share the values that matter most to me, and do they care about people like me? Second, can I trust them to represent me faithfully? Third, do they have the personal qualities that lead me to believe they'll do right by my values and interests, such as integrity, leadership, and competence? And fourth, if there's an issue that really matters to me (e.g., the Iraq War), what's their stand on it, and can I trust them to think about it and make decisions which I would probably make if I had all the information they'll have as my elected representative?
And those turn out to be just the questions voters do ask when casting their ballots, and in just that order.“

Another useful website

http://www.ted.com/ Ted.com is packed full of examples of high quality oratory that we can learn from. The majority have nothing to do with green politics but are invaluable none-the-less for people trying to learn to become more insipiring public speakers.

Andy

ps well done to Rupert, Matthew, and Matt for setting this site up - a brilliant idea

The Framing Project

About

Established in 2008, the Green Words Workshop is a virtual forum for the discussion & development of ways to reach the ordinary public with exciting & radical green political messages and ideas. This is the first time such a project, focussing on the role of values, framing, narratives, emotions and identity, has been initiated in Britain. The writers behind the project, Dr Rupert Read, of the University of East Anglia and Matthew LJ Wootton are developing these ideas for publication in a forthcoming book, titled "The Values Revolution". Please feel free to read the articles on the website and make your own comments & contributions.
